THE LOTTERY
Symbolism
The Lottery

The actual drawing is a representation of any idea that is passed down from one generation to the next and willingly accepted by people no matter how crazy or absurd it may be. The villagers follow the rules of the lottery without question simply because there always has been a lottery and there certainly always will be one because no one will object to it.
The Black Box

Although the box is old, beaten up, and falling apart, the villagers continue to use it and refuse to create another. This box is a symbol of tradition. Even though the villagers don't understand the origins of, or reasoning behind the lottery, they still participate every year.
